For the second straight night, the Astros bullpen couldn’t hold an eighth-inning lead.
Montero retired the first two hitters he faced before walking Eugenio Suárez. Cal Raleigh then hit a dribbler for an infield single to the left side as Alex Bregman and Jeremy Peña ran into each other. Teoscar Hernández then reached on a ball deep in the hole, with Peña’s throw to Bregman at third off-line to get the force.
That brought up J.P. Crawford, who rocketed a three-run double 105.9 mph off the bat to center field to level the score. Stanek relieved Montero and walked pinch hitter Taylor Trammell before giving up a two-run double to Jose Caballero and RBI singles to Julio Rodríguez and Jarred Kelenic to complete the Astros’ implosion.
The seven runs allowed were the most by the Astros’ bullpen since giving up seven on April 22, 2022, in an 11-1 loss in Seattle.France looked like his night might be an abbreviated one, as he loaded the bases in the first inning and needed 29 pitches to get out of the frame unscathed. But he settled in, allowing only two more hits the rest of the way while finishing with five strikeouts.
France became the second Astros rookie in as many seasons to throw five shutout innings in his major league debut. Hunter Brown threw six scoreless innings against the Rangers in his first start last Sept. 5.
