Mark McGowan stepping down as Western Australian Premier “hurts” Labor’s federal election campaign, says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.
Mr Clennell said Labor picked up five seats in the last federal election and have a majority in the parliament of three.
“The chances of the Liberals snatching back some of those five are greater today, there’s absolutely no doubt about it,” he said. “There was a personal vote for Mark McGowan, many traditional Liberal voters and supporters voted because it was McGowan more than it was Labor and some of them took that vote federally.”
“I think it hurts Labor’s federal election campaign – we’re a long way off … but if you were thinking about a federal Liberal tilt in WA now … you’d feel better today than you did yesterday.”
