The Defence Minister has appeared to ignore one of Beijing's action points to renew ties between the two nations as he pledged to bolster the Australian military amid China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific.
Mr Marles also applauded the AUKUS security pact with the US and United Kingdom and told how he will be put forward"specific measures" to strengthen its alliance.
The comments of forging closer ties with the US from Mr Marles is not expected to sit well with Beijing after it flagged four demands over the weekend that will help Australia improve its ties with the powerhouse nation. Thirdly, it wants Australia to not target or be controlled by third parties and the fourth point is to build a positive and pragmatic foundation of public opinion.
