Using underwater endoscopes, researchers have already discreetly filmed the freshwater cod taking refuge in several of the new purpose-built habitats.
Two fishers have been fined $645 on the spot for ignoring a total fishing ban designed to protect the endangered Mary River cod during this year's breeding season.
"We put a log into the river, and we're seeing a success, it's spawning within that log," Dr Carpenter-Bundhoo said.Nathaniel Larsen and Dr Carpenter-Bundhoo drop an endoscopic camera down to one of the logs to see what's inside.Funded by the National Environmental Science Program, the work is a joint project between Griffith University, and two natural resource management groups — the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee and the Burnett Mary Regional Group .
They are especially vulnerable during the breeding season, when just a few moments away from their eggs can prove fatal for the cod's young, which become easy prey for predators. Researcher, conservationist and traditional owners of the Mary River say the invasive tilapia has infiltrated the entire river system.In recent years, the Mary River cod has faced a new challenge as the invasive pest fish tilapia has spread, targeting its eggs and young.
