Toby Loughnane, convicted of murdering his girlfriend Maryam Hamka and concealing her body, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Toby Loughnane, a 45-year-old man, was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Maryam Hamka, and the subsequent concealment of her body in bushland. Loughnane initially claimed that Hamka, a 37-year-old woman, died from a drug overdose on April 11, 2021, and that his only mistake was failing to call an ambulance. However, the jury rejected this narrative, opting to believe the prosecution's argument that Loughnane intentionally assaulted Hamka, leading to her death.

Following the murder, Loughnane buried Hamka's body in a shallow grave at Cape Schanck, on the Mornington Peninsula. He eventually led investigators to her remains in August 2023. During the sentencing hearing in Melbourne's supreme court on Friday, the judge acknowledged the prolonged family violence that characterized the relationship as an aggravating factor. However, the judge also reduced Loughnane's sentence slightly in recognition of his decision to reveal Hamka's burial site to the police. Hamka's family and friends attended the court proceedings, hoping for justice, knowing that no sentence could fully compensate for their loss.
