With the number of jobs exceeding the number of unemployed workers for the first time, next month’s summit will seek solutions for the country’s immigration problem.
Announcing plans for the government’s much-anticipated September jobs summit, Anthony Albanese struck on just how difficult Australia’s hunt for skilled workers has become.at Parliament House, he recounted the peculiar challenges faced by a state delegation dispatched overseas to recruit workers for short-staffed industries.
With more than 70 unique visa programs, each with complex criteria and subcategories and hundreds of individual labour agreements and skilled occupation lists sitting over the top, changing eligibility rules are overwhelming potential applicants. “Expected future growth in key sectors, including in the care economy, raises further questions about how Australia will meet our workforce needs over the medium term,” Treasury said.
Hanson says caps on migration into Australia should be viewed as targets to aim for, not ceilings limiting the rate of incoming workers. “You have to process family visas within a period of time. It’s unlawful not to. But that can also be a deterrent if skilled migrants think in the future they might not be able to bring their family members to Australia.”
There’s no substantive evidence of a positive net inflow of temporary workers into Australia since borders reopened, and analysts at the bank warned “substantial delays” have hit processing of visas.
