A vast Soviet-era dam in the Russian controlled part of southern Ukraine was blown up on Tuesday, unleashing a flood of water across the war zone, according to both Ukrainian and Russian forces.
Unverified videos on social media show a series of intense explosions around the Nova Kakhovka DamBoth Ukraine and Russia are blaming each other for the dam's destructionThe area surrounding the dam is being evacuated, the Kherson region's Russian-installed governor said.
Ukraine's Interior Ministry called for residents of 10 villages on the Dnipro River’s right bank and parts of the city of Kherson to gather essential documents and pets, turn off appliances and leave. Mr Zelenskyy's chief of staff Andriy Yermak, called the destruction of the dam "ecocide" that presented a threat to the nearby Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant."The Kakhovka [dam] was blown up by the Russian occupying forces," the southern command of Ukraine's armed forces said on Tuesday on its Facebook page.
