Supported by GooglePixel_US: Alex Chidiac is familiar with disappointment. But after failing to make Australia's 2019 World Cup roster, new opportunities restored her passion. The Racing Louisville midfielder explains how she and her game have evolved.

Chidiac is all too familiar with the push and pull of hoping for a spot that may never come., all the more difficult for the then-20-year-old who had yet to experience such a big disappointment in her career.

“Being completely honest,” she said, “there’s been moments where I have lost it and moments where I’ve wanted to withdraw from the national team because it just got a bit too much for me, and wanted to just take a step back and play football for the love of it.”Chidiac said she found that joy when she was on loan with the Victory, where she was able to play with a lot of her friends.

“I do have great friends here,” she said. “But it’s not the same escape. You have a bad session when you’re in Australia, and you have a whole bunch of things to distract you. And you can kind of have a bit more of a life balance. But here it is very focused and honed in.”Chidiac has been working her way back into the Matildas squad under the observation of head coach Gustavsson, who replaced Ante Milicic . After a successful stint as an assistant coach with the U.S.

“I’ve noticed that values the smaller moments,” she said. “So you know, a big tackle in a game, as opposed to scoring a goal. He really values the tackle that leads up to a goal or something like that. There are moments in games where you can really impress him with something that you think is quite simple, but it’s in the way that you do it and the way that you act from it and the energy that you bring to a team.

It did leave some space behind her if Scotland had been able to progress the ball, but Chidiac said she was confident in her fellow midfielders’ ability to adapt. “It’s more the runs off the ball from the other players, I think that kind of goes unnoticed quite a bit,” she said. “But I think I noticed that Cortnee was making a run further away, dragging a defender and it was definitely harder for me to then find the pass to her, but open up a space for me to shoot.”
