Hauser took the early lead in the open water swim and was sixth out of the water, immediately behind leader Tayler Reid of New Zealand.
By the second of four 5km loops, the three leaders had a decisive break of 21 seconds over the chase group of 15 that included Hauser, Yee and Birtwhistle.
