The Hervey Bay mum says quick intervention and a dedicated neonatal rescue team helped her 'miracle' babies survive. However, the Queensland service wants more support to keep up with growing demand.
Kaydee Selby-Brown was terrified when she had to unexpectedly deliver her twin girls in a regional Queensland hospital at 23 weeks pregnant last year.
NeoRESQ, a neonatal retrieval service based at the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital , was then called to collect the twins and transfer them to Brisbane. The twins' condition stabilised after five months at the hospital, which allowed them to be transferred to the paediatric unit at Queensland Children's Hospital. It would be a further six months before the girls stopped needing oxygen and nasogastric tubes to assist with breathing and eating.
Gynaecologist Dr Margaret Bickerstaff was able to push the baby back into the uterus and sew the cervix shut."I like, 'Dear God, I'm never going to be able to save this pregnancy.' So I think it was quite a miracle really." The medical director for neonatology at RBWH, Lucy Cooke, said the more preterm a baby was, the more help they needed."But significantly lower at 22 weeks, in the region of 10 to 20 per cent."Dr Cooke said infections, immature lungs, breathing difficulties, bleeding into the brain, as well as feeding and nutrition were the main concerns for premature babies.
