In a market crowded with big guns, a talented bunch of lesser-known winemakers are making their mark with chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills, writes Sky News Australia Wine and Travel Editor Des Houghton.

Now a group of lesser-known players like Michael Sawyer are staking a claim as the nation’s great chardonnay revival gathers pace.

Sawyer, 49, went on to study winemaking and work as a fly-in, fly-out winemaker in the Rhone Valley in France. He also spent two years polishing his skills at Willamette Valley Vineyards in Oregon in the USA, often working in the snow. It’s a hand-picked, small batch wine with floral aromas and stonefruit flavours and a gentle, citrussy acidity.Sawyer wine is a small-time family affair, with Sawyer’s wife, Zoe, designing the labels while holding down a job in retail.

Elena Brooks is hardly an upstart. She is a seasoned winemaker making a number of different styles under different labels.
