Following Gina Rinehart’s withdrawal from a plan to redevelop Great Keppel Island Resort, a central Queensland mayor has urged the state government to drive the revival.

“A significant amount of work has now been completed as part of an extensive review process for the project, which was enhanced by the positive engagement with Tower Holdings, relevant stakeholders and government departments at all levels,” it said in a statement.

Speaking in far north Queensland on Wednesday, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she shared the disappointment over the decision. “Businesses like Hancock Prospecting are in business to make money, and it didn’t stack up, so I don’t think there’s any blame to be allocated here. I think everyone worked very hard to get this over the line.”“I think we, as a community, just need to keep supporting it.

“When I was growing up here, Great Keppel Island was pumping,” he said. “As a university student in those days, it was fantastic because we would go over there on Friday night after lectures, party on, sleep on the beach, and catch the boat home the following morning.
