The NSW Government has ordered an investigation following the stabbing of a 17-year-old boy in Sydney ’s west, with the attack allegedly carried out by a mental health patient with a knife obsession. The review will examine how John Hickey, 24 was allowed to leave the custody of NSW Health on two occasions despite advice that he was a public threat.

Police said the injured teen was slashed with a box cutter and described his neck wound as “significant” because it was a number of centimetres long and “fairly deep”. The alleged attack occurred at Heber Park in Hebersham on Monday night, when the boy was playing soccer.
