Victoria will push for mathematics to become a prerequisite for specific university courses when ministers meet to discuss the nation'sAustralian students' declining results in mathematics have led to a call for universities to make maths a prerequisite subject for entry to more courses.
The release last week of 2018’s test results revealed Australian 15-year-old students have slid from well above average when first tested in 2003 to average in mathematics among OECD nations. “I will also be raising the need for university courses to include prerequisites, particularly in maths, in relevant courses such as engineering – a key recommendation of Dr Alan Finkel.”
But rather than call for more prerequisite subjects, he has called for Australian universities to follow the example of the Russell Group of universities in Britain, an alliance of universities that advises students which subjects are essential and which are useful for a broad range of university courses. The percentage of Australian students enrolled in higher mathematics in year 12 fell to 9.
