Deep in the twisting bowels of Hobart’s Mona, the eccentric Museum of Old and New Art, two yellow steel creatures have arrived to scratch and scrape at a cavern floor.
tap its feet. “I reckon that’s going onto the floor. I’m not sure it’s desirable ... Luckily, David [Walsh, millionaire owner of Mona] does like leaving marks that are left on the floor after things. There has been ink splattered and things like that and they’ve become fixtures of the museum ... So there will probably be a giant scratch mark from these guys.”Capper’s work, playing with the idea of an evolving machine, is a neat thematic fit for Mona.
“It’s learning by doing,” he says. “This place is an incredible site of entertainment, from art to music to eating. It’s a site for learning – especially for David as this is a private museum.Rawlins says much of the inspiration comes from the owner. “[Walsh is] years ahead in his head,” he says. “He doesn’t make master plans, he’s just like ‘oh, let’s build a museum, oh, let’s build a bigger one’. It keeps evolving.
“So all of a sudden that whole idea of ‘taste’ and ‘choice’ have been completely collapsed ... our goal is not to tell you what to think about, or tell you that ‘this’ is more important than ‘that’. It’s up to you to just make your own decisions. Enjoy. We’re not creating the canon, we’re not anointing something. It could be quite the opposite, who knows?”Mona/Jesse Hunniford
