Royal Life Saving's latest national drowning report shows one in four people who drown are born overseas. A migrant water safety program helped Omnia beat her fear and avoid being a victim.

A new national drowning report shows 323 people drowned in the last financial year, 45 people more than last year.

Mr Chadwick said MFO had partnered with Surf Life Saving Queensland and the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre to deliver tailored messaging for migrant communities.Water safety classes are held at the beach and in MFO meeting rooms while swimming lessons in a sectioned-off part of the aquatic centre offer participants privacy.

"That includes people who are coming from countries where they may not have grown up around water, or may not have grown up where water is considered a leisure or recreation activity," said Stacey Pidgeon, manager of research and policy at RLS. "We know that a lot of adults do access English language classes when they first arrive. So, if we can build swimming and water safety into things adults are already doing then that removes a barrier.""It's not just about funding … it's about having policies in place to support aquatic facilities to be welcoming," Ms Pidgeon said.

Nicky Sloan says the Australian Swim Schools Association is working to increase accessibility to swim lessons for adults and migrant communities.Ms Sloan said some adults were self-conscious about not being able to swim and offering migrant communities private swim lessons as well as group sessions was an important part of ASSA's strategy.
