OPINION: Getting his four nominated directors on the AGL board is a huge coup for Mike Cannon-Brookes, but chairman Patricia McKenzie scored a win at the AGM too.
The most important moment at the AGL Energy annual general meeting came after the official business had ended, the live stream was turned off and most of the 300-odd attendees at the Melbourne Recital Hall had shuffled out.were ushered up on stage to meet the rest of the board.Sure, the trio were nominated as directors by the AGL board’s biggest critic, 11.
“I cannot speak on behalf of the new directors in relation to the climate transition action plan … but as a board, we will be looking to implement that plan moving forward, and I’m sure that our new directors will be enthusiastically a part of it,” she replied. But the approval of the AGL climate plan, which essentially restates the results of the strategic review delivered by AGL in September, is a minor victory for McKenzie, as is the strong vote in favour of her own chairmanship.
The flow of pre-meeting votes meant fireworks inside the AGM were always going to be limited. Just eight protesters from climate activist group Healthy Futures flanked the entrance, and climate-related questions on the floor of the meeting were surprisingly few.
