As Australia continues to progress plans to acquire nuclear submarines, China lauds Foreign Minister Penny Wong as Beijing seeks to repair ties.
The prospect of British submarines being based out of Perth with Australian sailors on board to undergo nuclear training will be advanced, with the head of the UK military to hold top-level talks with Australian officials next week.
A ministry spokesman welcomed Senator Wong downplaying the interpretation that her counterpart Wang Yi had issued four “demands” of Australia on how to improve relations at their groundbreaking meeting in Bali earlier this month. As part of this, Australian submariners would be incorporated in British crews to undertake training on operating nuclear-powered submarines, while infrastructure would be built up in readiness to base Australian submarines.Making Australia home port for British submarines would also allow Australia’s nuclear regulators the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the demands of overseeing a nuclear-propelled fleet.
