Milyanda Rogers first started making scrap metal sculptures and putting them by the roadside for school kids to enjoy. Now scores of them adorn the outback landscape.

From dawn 'til dusk, Milyanda Rogers can be found in her backyard shed, welding, twisting and hammering old rusted tools and scrap metal into objects of beauty.

Ms Rogers used to live on a cattle property along the route now known as the Lake Dunn Sculpture Trail.Visitors admire two giant jabiru sculptures. "At that time my kids, our neighbours, there was a few kids going to Longreach School of the Air and they had to drive in and out," she said. The trail is like a treasure hunt — from spying a returning soldier sitting astride his horse on the edge of a bluff, to a kookaburra sitting high in a gum tree.

In Muttaburra, 153km from the trail, Jenni Gray has started holding a sculpture festival every five years."I thought it would give people something to do," Ms Gray said. This year, the Muttaburra Sculpture Festival displayed works of art along a 4km walking track on the edge of town, bringing to life stories from the history of Muttaburra and the wider region.
