The review made 13 recommendations to tighten hiring processes and says information handed to ministers during recruitment for the US post was “misleading”.
NSW Ministers will be banned from taking a role in a public sector agency relevant to their former role for 18 months after leaving government following a review into John Barilaro’s appointment to a US trade post.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet commissioned former public service boss Graeme Head to probe Mr Barilaro’s appointment in July amid an outcry over the role accused the government of handing jobs-to-mates and giving preferential treatment for former MPs. The reports findings make for uncomfortable reading for the government and Investment NSW, the high-profile agency which was responsible for recruiting the senior trade and investment commissioner role which later went to Mr Barilaro.
The NSW Government will adopt 12 of the review’s 13 recommendations in an attempt to bolster the probity of its senior roles and trade appointment processes. “It raises questions in relation to a breach of the ministerial code of conduct in relation to instruction given to a departmental secretary,” Mr Perrottet said. “It has made no finding regarding Mr Ayres’ conduct but raises concerns about his compliance with ministerial guidelines.
