NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has addressed the incident, which saw two missiles strike a village in eastern Poland on Tuesday, local time.
The Polish government initially confirmed the missiles were “Russian made” and summoned an ambassador from Moscow to provide an explanation.
Speaking at the meeting of NATO allies in Brussels convened shortly after the attack, Mr Stoltenberg said the initial investigation suggests a Ukrainian air defence system was triggered by a flurry of Russian missiles, and the missiles “unfortunately fell on Polish territory”. “Let me be clear: this is not Ukraine’s fault. Russia bears the ultimate responsibility as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine,” Mr Stoltenberg added.
