With both parents in hospital with COVID-19, 17-year-old Majaddid Ali suddenly had to care for five siblings and prepare for four VCE exams. adamlcarey VCEresults classof2021 covidvic successstories

The 17-year-old lives with his family of eight in Dallas, one of Melbourne’s poorest suburbs. He attends Hume Central Secondary College on Broadmeadows, a school with a highly disadvantaged cohort of students.

Majaddid Ali tackled VCE with both parents in hospital with COVID-19, but scored an ATAR of 87, enough to get into his dream course. In term three this year, as his year 12 exams loomed, Majaddid and his entire family caught COVID-19 after a teacher at his youngest sister’s childcare centre became infected with the Delta variant. But one after the other, his father then his mother became so ill they were both put in intensive care.

Four exams in mathematical methods, biology, physics and data analytics were ahead of him, but his studies suddenly faded into the background.“I couldn’t focus much at home, the way that everything happened, I just couldn’t focus on my topics online,” he said.Majaddid, who is of Palestinian heritage, was born in Melbourne but spent most of his childhood in Saudi Arabia.

Despite the almost unbearable anxiety, Majaddid kept applying himself as much as he could, showing up to remote lessons, senior campus principal Silvia Quaine said.“I called him when his family had COVID and he was all by himself at home. I offered him support and he said he’d be OK. We offered him food and he said he’d be OK, as long as we let his teachers know he is having these struggles.
