Harsh lockdown restrictions across Australia resulted in a record drop in the number of couples tying the knot last year, with the biggest decrease unsurprisingly recorded in Victoria.
Tough measures placed on gatherings and travel in states and territories in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus which first arrived Down Under nearly two years ago has prompted an enormous drop in the number of marriages registered last year.
Premier Daniel Andrews placed Melbourne under stage four restrictions in early August which included a total ban on wedding ceremonies - except on compassionate grounds. The 30.6 per cent decline recorded between 2019 and 2020 marks the largest annual decrease in marriages reported by the ABS since 1901 and the lowest number reported in Australia since 1961 when 76,686 marriages were registered.
