Moana 2 is the first film in history to be released in both English and an Indigenous language at the same time.
Jaedyn Randell remembers being a kid sitting in the back of her mum's car, singing along to her favourite Disney songs. Now, she actually is one — playing the lead role in the soon-to-be-released Māori language version of Moana 2.
Jaedyn Randell's dream of becoming a Disney princess has become a reality three times now, as she's taken on the role of Moana in the original and sequel, and also the role of Anna in Frozen Reo Māori. When Moana first came out in 2016, Jaedyn says she fell in love with the movie. She immediately related to the characters.
Jaedyn hopes Moana 2 Reo Māori sends a message to other Māori girls that they can aspire to be Disney princesses too. After a successful audition, Jaedyn landed the role of Moana. She describes it as a "real 'pinch me' moment".When the film was released in cinemas in 2017 across New Zealand to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori — Māori language week – it sold out at all 30 screenings.
"Film is an important tool for language, not only language preservation, but also mana motuhake, cultural sovereignty, for us to be able to embrace the cultural specificities of being Māori," says film producer Mia Mārama.Moana 2 Reo Māori is the sixth film released in Te Reo Māori by NZ production company Matewa Media in association with Walt Disney Animation Studios.
