Moran portrait prize goes to ‘dauber’s trifecta’ after judges fail to agree | Engalvo
For the first time in its 33-year history, the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize has been awarded to three artists, each sharing in an expanded $300,000 prize pool, in what judge Tim Storrier dubbed the “dauber’s trifecta”.
The impasse was solved by declaring the trio of winners and doubling the prize money to give them $100,000 each.“As with all prizes of this nature, people will disagree on the choices … However, they can’t deny the generosity of the Moran Foundation,” Storrier said. “After all, the equivalent of three Archibald Prizes in one day is really something – a dauber’s trifecta.”
Keddie, who attended the announcement at Juniper Hall in Oxford Street, said she was thrilled at the judges’ choice.“I think it is so celebratory,” she said. “It’s been so difficult for artists across the board for the last couple of years, and particularly the last year. It’s such a fantastic choice to honour three artists whose work is absolutely beautiful and worthy of the prize.
“I feel that to be a good doctor, let alone a surgeon, you’ve got to have an intense interest in the human condition, which I always have done,” he said. “Medicine is regarded, historically, as the oldest artform.”
