One in 10 Australian students switches from the public to the private school system in year 7, a migration that a new analysis of census data shows has become more pronounced in the past two decades

.

Dr Rowe's report also showed that Victoria has the highest proportion of secondary students in the private system, with 43 per cent in Catholic or independent schools.Dr John Hattie, laureate professor of education at the University of Melbourne, said parents' main motivation when choosing a school is the type of student their child will be associating with.

Dr Hattie said while those motivations weren't specific to Australia, parents here are influenced by the fact "our private system is incredibly well-resourced by the government compared to any other system in the world". Trevor Cobbold, national convenor of Save our Schools, said while government schools' enrolment share hadn't increased significantly, the turnaround in the march to non-government schools over the past two years reflected a shifting perception in society.
