A treasure hunt crossed with mountain biking — how mountain bike orienteering is shifting the balance of two-wheel competition from brawn to brains.
Over 200 competitors took part in the event, where riders had to negotiate a course to find "treasure" within a 60-minute time frame. These are descriptions of mountain bike orienteering , a relatively new sport that mixes brains with bikes.
The aim of the game is to find all the treasure — or controls in the official lingo — mapped out on the course and get back to the finish line as quickly as possible. " Strong mountain biker can win and strong orienteer, who is very weak on a bike, can win, because you need variety of skills."An additional catch is that competitors are only allowed to view the course seconds before their 60-minute time-limit starts.
"When you think about all people who are reading mobile phone on the go, this is pretty much a needed skill," she said.New Zealander Joe Sherriff says getting lost is part of the fun, but with his experience has worked out that sometimes slow and steady wins the race.
