MP 'astounded' after letter to Police Minister gets to shown to motorists making illegal left turn
An investigation has been launched into how an MP's private letter to South Australian Police Minister Vincent Tarzia ended up being distributed by frontline police as an apparent justification for a traffic sting in Adelaide's west.Police officers reportedly directed motorists to the contents of the letter if they had any complaints about their fine
She said police undertook traffic operations in her electorate at least six times in early July and, after pulling people over for traffic infringements, had been handing the motorists photocopies of her private letter to Mr Tarzia. "The police officer then handed me a flyer and informed me that was the reason he was pulling me over, and any issues I had at the time should be taken up with that letter," she said. The caller said she was "flabbergasted" after reading the flyer to see that it was a letter from an opposition MP to a Liberal Minister.
There is no left turn allowed from Kinkaid Avenue to Streeters Road between 7:00am and 9:00am on weekdays.During budget estimates hearings in Parliament last week Mr Tarzia was grilled about the letter but said he could not explain how it was distributed to police. But he said Police Commissioner Grant Stevens had since informed him that the nature of the issue constituted a complaint and would therefore be investigated. The ABC contacted the office of Vincent Tarzia but it said he could not comment while an investigation was underway.
