The former prime minister's comments about the elderly seem entirely at odds with with his previous statements about the sanctity of every human life, writes Wendy Tuohy | OPINION
Each week since the start of Melbourne's seemingly endless lockdown I've had the pleasure of seeing my treasured dad for a minute or so – albeit over the top of masks – to hand over some groceries.
The thought of my vital dad on a respirator makes me feel physically ill; seeing the pain of hundreds of families who have lost loved elders his age to COVID-19 has been deeply distressing. As I write, Victoria's death toll is 650, and we have recorded 59 new deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, "following the delay in reporting of aged care fatalities in July and August".
He's the devout guy for whom all life is so precious the decision or need to end even a very early stage pregnancy is morally wrong. I recall how hurtful it was for many women whose circumstances he could know nothing about when Abbott decreed "abortion is the easy way out".
