As the Green Wattle fire continues to burn on Thursday night, I am one of the many who watch their loved one go out to fight the fire as a volunteer. My 20-year-old son joined the NSW Rural Fire Service this year and has seen first-hand the devastation that fire causes.

Last week my son came home after a 14-hour night shift fighting the Green Wattle fire and was absolutely exhausted. His face was covered in soot and his hands were black. Despite this, he had the most peaceful expression on his face. He walked over to me and said: “Mum, I need a hug.” I can’t express how proud I am of my son and of every individual who gives their time and their effort to care for someone else and for our precious environment. There is so much uncertainty in the world today but human nature has the ability to outshine it all.
