'Very unpredictable' fire conditions forecast for NSW

Scorching temperatures are forecast for parts of New South Wales today, while windy conditions are expected to create trouble for firefighters. weather

The Rural Fire Service has forecast extreme fire danger for the Greater Sydney, Illawarra and Shoalhaven and Southern Ranges areas, with the unsafe conditions expected to continue through to Saturday.

“Not only are we going to experience very high temperatures on Thursday and Saturday but there’s the exceedingly concerning wind conditions,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned on Wednesday. “We’re going to have a number of wind fronts escalating the fuel, the fires burning, and the potential to have spot fires and embers travelling very long distances. It’s going to mean very unpredictable fire conditions.”

Daytime temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of NSW and the ACT, while in the western half of the state the mercury could top 45C. Wind gusts could reach more than 100 kilometres per hour. Dangerous conditions have resulted in a significant loss of property. Danger is still present for many communities, with conditions set to deteriorate Thu & Sat. So far this season over 760 homes have been destroyed, & more than 12,900 buildings have been saved.
