Ilknur Caliskan, 47, was accused of fatally stabbing her husband in September 2023. The 50-year-old man was discovered deceased inside a vehicle in Clonbinane, a location situated north of Melbourne. A central point of contention during the prosecution's case revolved around whether Caliskan was experiencing a sleep disorder , potentially rendering her incapable of acting with conscious and voluntary intent. This question was raised during a pre-trial hearing held in November.
Caliskan appeared before the Shepparton Magistrates' Court on a murder charge. Initially, she was scheduled to stand trial in the Victorian Supreme Court in March. However, prosecutors announced today that the charges against her had been discontinued. No specific justification was provided for the decision to drop the charges, although Caliskan's legal representatives had previously indicated their intention to explore parasomnia as a potential defense.Caliskan was granted bail in April 2024 to facilitate a sleep study in Sydney. Prosecutors received the expert report generated from this study in November. At a directions hearing in January, prosecutors revealed that they were awaiting the perspectives of the deceased's relatives residing in Turkey before making a definitive determination regarding the case
