My mom is a fighter for justice. She taught kindergarten through third grade for 30-plus years. She adopted me, and she and my adoptive father are Finnish-Americans who had three kids of their own, as well as another African-American son. She was a really strong fighter for us, and was so protective of us. Part of it comes from her. Another part of it comes from the fact that I always felt different as a kid, even in my family, as loving as it was.
