A minibus takes inhabitants to and from the city throughout the day and they are free to come and go; the children are enrolled in local schools, some adults are working nearby or learning English and Olesia and her friends have been taking day trips to other Scottish cities. There is, Olesia says, a “community”. Unlike those Ukrainians who moved in with UK hosts, she is surrounded by people who speak the same language and understand her experience.
But while the Scottish Government’s use of the ship winds down, Home Secretary Suella Braverman is preparing to announce plans to house up to 506 migrants on board a three-storey barge in Dover’s Portland Harbour, as part of theThe barge was previously used by the Netherlands to house around 500 asylum seekers in the early 2000s, but was revamped with en-suite rooms, a TV lounge and gym after being criticised as “oppressive”.
