Victoria will bring in an American public transport ticketing specialist to overhaul the outdated myki system for the state's trains, trams and buses.
Three sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Andrews government had decided not to give current operator NTT Data another extension to its $100-million-a-year contract and will replace it with Conduent.
Cubic was considered a frontrunner, given it pioneered “contactless” bankcard and smartphone payments and runs some of the world’s biggest transport systems, including in Sydney, London and New York. The Andrews government has promised the contract would deliver key improvements, including allowing passengers to touch on with a bank card or iPhone, which has been possible in London since 2012 and in Sydney since 2018.
The introduction of contactless bankcard travel would overcome some major remaining criticisms of myki, including: the $6 cost of smartcards; the lack of a single-trip option for visitors; the fact the cards expire after four years; and, the inability to buy them or top them up on trams or buses.
