'Nail in the coffin of democracy': It's D-day for Sydney's prize dog fight | michaelkoziol

It's the dog fight that has captivated Sydney - or at least a small part of it - and this month it will command the attention of the state's peak lawmaking bodies: the Parliament and the Supreme Court.

"It's the first nail in the coffin of democracy," he says. "To suddenly change the democratic process by which people choose to live undermines confidence in the whole strata living paradigm." And in Rose Bay, 83-year-old Colin Marshall ran afoul of building bureaucrats who retrospectively changed the rules to ban his greyhound Bu shortly after he purchased his unit. They reversed that decision following media coverage of the case.

The strata committee has hired Gregory Sirtes SC, who recently represented media entrepreneur Mia Freedman in an unrelated property dispute. Committee chair Marlyn Robertson, who has lived in the Horizon for five years, says residents have spent more than $150,000 in strata levies on the legal battle.Looking on at this stoush are some of the Horizon's well-known occupants; heiress Francesca Packer Barham, a known supporter of Cooper, actress Jacki Weaver and MONA founder David Walsh.
