As the gruelling Voice to Parliament campaign draws to a close, Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has reflected on the “exhausting” and at times nasty debate surrounding the most significant proposed change to the country’s constitution in decades.
Almost six months after being thrusted into the spotlight with her appointment as shadow minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator Price is on the precipice of leading the No campaign to a historic victory.
“It's at times exhausting and challenging. I think it's nasty accusations that are thrown at you and name calling and, and you know, being accused of fearmongering and being misleading,” Senator Price said.“And if we can't do that, and all the other side can do is call us names, then they have nothing, they have nothing and that's clear.”
But as both sides of the debate rapidly increased campaigning, the level of support shifted the other way. “But really, that nastiness comes predominantly from the Yes side, which is all the more reason why I don't think Australians should support this. When the government formally unveiled the proposed question and amendment following consultations with the Referendum Working Group in March 2023, support had slid by almost 20 per cent in an Essential Poll.
“And I and I think that once the Australian people started asking questions and realising that, you know, there was no detail being provided as to how this proposal is supposed to improve anybody's life, I think that's when, you know, Australians began to err on the side of caution,” the Country Liberal Party Senator said.
In the days leading up to Saturday, the now national figure felt she was “hurtling toward” the historic date. “I'll certainly work with the government, but whether they'll work with me is, you know, the question to be asked,” Senator Price said. All the polls are showing Australians will resoundingly reject the constitutional change, but Senator Price will not rest on her laurels.
