An ACT magistrate refuses to formally charge a man with serious alleged offences, including intending to kill and intending to cause public harm, after a tip-off to the National Security Hotline and a raid of a home in Canberra's south.

A tip-off to the National Security Hotline and a raid of a home in Canberra's south yesterday has landed a 28-year-old man in court, but he has yet to be formally charged with the serious offences police allege he committed.

But, during a brief appearance, Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker declined to formally charge the man after reading a report on his case. The man was arrested after police seized a number of items from his home in the suburb of Griffith on Tuesday. Detective Superintendent Scott Moller said there were other people in the home at the time, but he would not comment on specific details of the ongoing investigation."I would like to stress at this time that there was no evidence to suggest that this man was working with anybody else or within a group," Detective Superintendent Moller said.

"I would also like to reassure the community at this time that ACT Policing is working with our partners and we'll continue to pursue all available information. No return date has been given for the man's next court appearance.
