Nationals leader David Littleproud has come out against a public holiday if the Matildas win the World Cup, warning of the cost to employers.
Australians are being warned of the cost to employers of a public holiday if the Matildas win the FIFA Women’s World Cup, with Nationals leader David Littleproud coming out against the idea before it is decided at national cabinet this Wednesday.to back the holiday but is facing calls from business leaders to drop the proposal because of its cost, turning the issue into a political dispute after the team’s victory over France on Saturday night.
“I don’t want to be Captain Killjoy on this but look, I think business has a point here – it’s easy to call for a national public holiday when someone else is paying for it,” the Nationals leader told ABC’s Insiders program.“I think we’ve just got to understand that someone’s got to foot that bill and businesses out there are doing it tough.
Albanese said on Friday he would raise the issue with state premiers and territory chief ministers when they meet for national cabinet in Brisbane on Wednesday, but emphasised that public holidays are determined by state and territory governments. NSW Premier Chris Minns has indicated that he would back a public holiday if the Matildas win the final, to be held on August 20, while Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has avoided any commitment out of concern he would “jinx” the outcome.Luis Enrique Ascui
