David Littleproud is against the prime minister’s idea of a public holiday if the Matildas win the World Cup, choosing to back concerned employers instead.

Australians are being warned of the cost to employers of a national public holiday if the Matildas win the FIFA Women’s World Cup, sparking a political clash over the idea before a national cabinet decision this week.

“I don’t want to be Captain Killjoy on this but look, I think business has a point here – it’s easy to call for a national public holiday when someone else is paying for it,” the Nationals leader told ABC’s“I think we’ve just got to understand that someone’s got to foot that bill and businesses out there are doing it tough.

Albanese sounded more certain there would be a holiday when asked about it last Tuesday in an interview on Triple M breakfast radio.“It’ll be on the agenda, for sure. It’d be a pretty brave Australian state leader, wouldn’t it, who said no to that,” he said. NSW Premier Chris Minns has indicated he would back a public holiday if the Matildas win the final, while Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has avoided any commitment out of concern he would “jinx” the outcome.
