A better integrated physical and mental healthcare approach is being called for to help reduce the number of potentially avoidable deaths in NSW mental psychiatric wards.
Researchers from UNSW found of the 471 deaths that occurred in inpatient psychiatric wards between 2002 and 2012, at least 141 were deemed preventable., examined the mortality rates and causes of death during psychiatric care.
"There is a clear need to develop better preventative strategies and improve the overall quality of care for people with severe mental illness," Gunaratne said. "Understandably, there is a focus on reducing deaths from suicide in mental health wards; these are an absolute tragedy when they occur," said Gunaratne.
This includes improvements to primary and preventative care in the community and access to physical healthcare in psychiatric wards.
