Netanyahu pointedly said that today was not 'the end of the story' of Israel and Hezbollah
Rocket fire from Lebanon damaged a house in Acre, Israel. Hezbollah and the IDF launched strikes into each other’s territory early Sunday , launched at least 210 rockets and 20 drones across Lebanon’s southern border, Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant’s 6.47am declaration of a state of emergency, giving the military powers of “limiting gatherings and closing sites where it may be relevant”, did little to dispel that sense of foreboding.
The subsequent rocket barrage, which Hezbollah blithely described as the “first phase” of a new operation against Israel, was indeed the “harsh response” that had been predicted to follow Israel’s pre-emptive onslaught. And even if that risk has abated for now as a result of Israel’s pre-emptive strike – and while it may have done, it’s much too early to be sure – Washington also sees a successful conclusion as highly desirable in itself.
Some Israelis I have spoken to in the last few days have talked of a mood of exhausted fatalism, which may be one reason that while opinion polls show a strong majority in favour of Netanyahu doing a hostage deal, the demonstrations on their behalf, though passionate, have been getting smaller.
