Western Australia is launching six portable and two fixed traffic cameras equipped with AI technology to detect drivers using mobile phones or other objects while behind the wheel. The cameras will begin operating from Australia Day, but drivers will have a three-month grace period with no fines issued until April 2025.

Western Australia has a "culture problem" with using a mobile phone while driving, according to the state's road safety commissioner who is rolling out new cameras to target offenders. "This is about drivers changing their behaviour. We have a culture problem, we need to address it and these cameras are the first step in doing that," he said.WA Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner says the cameras will help address a "culture problem".Mr Warner said the AI would be able to detect whether people are holding "a packet of cigarettes" or a phone.
