Two tourists from Perth drowned after being caught in a rip current at a beach on Western Australia's South West coast. The 44-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were swimming on Saturday afternoon at Conspicuous Cliff beach, near Walpole, which is known for its treacherous waters. Police responded to calls for assistance regarding three adults in distress in the water around 2:40pm yesterday.

When police arrived, the three adults had been taken from the water and officers began CPR but the pair could not be revived. Police said all three adults were known to each other and were visiting from the Perth area. Conspicuous Cliff is about a 20-minute drive from Walpole and is popular for salmon fishing, surfing, and whale watching from July through September. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions warns tourists the stretch of coast can be hazardous due to large, unpredictable waves and swells, slippery rocks and strong currents. The beach at Conspicuous Cliff is not patrolled by lifesavers and is a popular surf spot, but locals typically avoid swimming there due to the strong currents
