"If there is ever a shark bite then we have these vessels now to be on the site within two to three hours setting SMART drumlines and being proactive about what we can do," Butcher said.
They will add to the state government's Shark Mitigation Program, which sees over 300 SMART drumlines deployed daily across the New South Wales coast to intercept, tag, relocate and release sharks. "We want people to know there are measures in place to identify if there are any sharks in the water," Deputy Premier Paul Toole said.
Since 2015, the Australian Shark Incident Database has recorded over 20 interactions on the Far North Coast alone.New shark vessels are being deployed at Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Sydney to respond to any attacks, to tag and track the creatures. The boats will bolster the world's largest shark monitoring program that's now tagged and tracking over 1500 animals.
"That's especially important with our shark listening stations, we now have 37 of those across the east coast of Australia, those stations send a real-time alert to the public and us as researchers," Butcher said.
