Coronavirus infections could have soared to more than 3000 per day in Victoria by the end of July without a lockdown, but further deaths are already inevitable, experts and health authorities say

.

"When you have something that's doubling every four or five days that's why you can go from three cases to 3000 in less than two months. That's how serious this is." His views echothose of Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton, who conceded that authorities could only work to limit the number of fatalities.

"There is a real risk that those admissions to intensive care will continue to rapidly rise and some people won't be able to be saved," Professor Booy said. Health authorities are battling numerous spot fires of community transmission across the city and beyond. Premier Daniel Andrews said on Tuesday that while many of the COVID-19 cases were still concentrated in or around identified hotspots, they were also emerging right across the city.

"At least [there will be] less transmission going on should there be cases that have been identified in those areas, or that have already spread and are yet to emerge," Professor Bennett said.
