The Personal Safety Survey 2021-2022 shows the extent to which sexual assault and harassment exists within Australia.
Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows one in five Australian women have experienced sexual assault.
The 2021-2022 survey collected information from people aged 18 and over about the nature and extent of their experiences. The PSS found an estimated 2.2 million adult women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15. That means women are over three times more likely to have experienced sexual violence by a man they knew than by a male stranger.
Milne said receiving inappropriate comments about their body or sex life was the most widely reported behaviour, experienced by 800,000 women. Full Stop Australia's head of advocacy Emily Dale says funding needs to be targeted to ensure it drives change.“We currently have a situation where crisis accommodation providers are having victim-survivors show up and there are no beds available for them and Full Stop Australia's counselling line is regularly at or over capacity.”
