Archaeologists say the latest finds in Pompeii – including a trunk with its lid left open, and a wooden cupboard – show a vulnerable class ambitious to climb the social ladder.

"In the Roman empire, there was an ample chunk of the population that struggled with their social status and for whom daily bread was anything but a given,'' Dr Zuchtriegel said.

The house has an exceptionally well-adorned cistern in its courtyard, but not all rooms were lavish, Dr Zuchtriegel said.In a bedroom, archaeologists found the remains of a bed frame with a trace of fabric from the pillow.
