Residents in south-west Sydney have been asked to be alert for signs and symptoms of measles after a child visited several locations while infectious.

A health alert for a highly contagious viral illness has been issued for south-west Sydney, with multiple medical centres and a TAFE playgroup listed as exposure sites.

Hot spots include the Bankstown TAFE playgroup on Tuesday, May 14, between 10am and 12.15pm, and Your Discount Chemist on Boronia Road at Greenacre on Saturday, May 18, between 1.45pm and 2.30pm. NSW Health said it would also be contacting patients who attended the Greenacre Medical Centre on 168 Waterloo Road on Saturday, May 18, between 12pm and 12.30pm, as well as Yagoona Family HeatlhCare on 457 Hume Highway on Monday, May 20, between 12.30pm and 2pm.

"It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it's important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms up until Friday 7 June."
