The International Swimmers' Alliance wants to improve the social and economic standing of its members, many of whom feel they have been let down over the years by the sport's governing bodies.

"I think there are some common issues that we have. I think we both want the sport to work well at all levels.

"I think there's a lot of common ground but there are some other issues that are maybe not discussed as much as we would like to, and here we are … we'd like to announce ourselves."FINA is currently facing an antitrust case in California after it threatened to ban swimmers from taking part in the International Swimming League, a professional team-based event set up by Ukrainian billionaire Konstantin Grigorishin outside its auspices.
